This is my last full week in Sept, and I had hoped we could
get a lot done. I will be around very briefly next
Wed and Thu, and then again around Sept 21 or 22.

I think that we could still profit from pushing on the
oil spill problem, even though it is not super-exciting;
it at least forces us to pay SOME attention to control.

The next step is to get some rules automatically produced by EURISKO!

from the AAAI paper, for instance, and smooth them into a page or two.

Thanks much. See you in one week.

Welcome back. Merle told me of your effect on Piaget...
Actually, RLL is ready now. The problem is it's distributed all over
the place - a ramification of space problems...
Yes, I did receive a copy of your message requesting more space; and NO,
CSD.RLL's allocation has not been upped.
At any event, some of it is on your directory, other parts on CSD.RLL, and the
rest is in CSD.IA.
I sent off a copy of RLL's way of handling facts to Dave last Thursday
-- you'll find a copy in your mailbox.
Dave, Mike and I have been working on MRS (nee DBL,) trying to get a
working mini-implementation by Wednesday in time for Mike & Ted's class;
and for Mark & Harold's perusal. We seem to be converging.
I've also spent a good amount of time discussing and updating the memo.
While a lot of it is acceptale to all of my critics,
there still remains much which has to be modified, it appears.
Shall I be content sending it out with such gross errors, or is an
n+1st iteration (for an ever increasing n) the better course?
I'll provide a summary of additional changes to RLL/EURISKO, on your
return.

It is almost certain that n+1st iteration is not worthwhile.
The work on MRS is probably representation for its own sake,
which is something we should be phasing out now. If Dave
wants to work on it, let him; he can wonder why no one makes
a fuss over his thesis. You and I should begin working almost
full time on heuristics. I have developed a theory of
heuristics (on the plane), and it was the hit of the conference.
On the plane home I completely revised it (well, not really
but it sounded good -- actually extended it). There are some
ramifications for RLL, but mostly we should just test it out.

("But why is work on HEURISTICS for its own sake worthwhile?"
)

There is a gentleman from Sweden in town who would like to meet
with some members of the HPP staff. I guess he made his original
contact with Bruce Yesterday, and Bruce has referred him to me.

Apparently he heard Ed Talk in Londen last year, and he felt it
would be usefull to talk with us. Also, apparently he wrote Ed
about three weeks ago and invited himself to come. But alas
the letter did not arrive or something. The main purpose of
his visit is to talk with HPP people, so it looks like
we should try to give him some time.

Name, Mr. Bachtin, he is associated with Stockholm University,
and some private enterprises. He is doing graduate work in
physchology. He has 15-17 years experience in
the ComputerScience Field. The private enterprise is Entel (not
sure of the spelling).

He will be here through early Friday morning, and is staying
at the Holiday Inn, Palo Alto.

Bruce has had a conversation with him and apparently he does not
know too much. We will give him a collection of readings for
today, then Bruce will spend some time with him late today or
early tommorrow. We would appreciate it if each of you on
this address list could spend a little time with him, say
an hour. Please let me or Lynn Gotelli know when would be
most convenient for you. If you are available today, rather
thank Wednesday or Thursday, that would be ok, it would
break up his day of reading.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

What do you mean? Enough of HOBBIT.KB existed for me to create
and populate dungeons, and wage simple combat and other adventures.
Did you tell him that we never really did it or similar?
The real inapplicability of what I did in HOBBIT is that there
I focused on individuals, and Slagle seems to be focusing on
units (no pun) of men and machines, rather than individuals.
Of course, with no HJOBBIT.KB still around, we would have little
to show him anyway.
What exactly did he ask for, and what exactly did you tell him?

I hope the load is light at RAND; I am hacking on my Dolphin.
I will check to see if your papers have been processed yet,

call back. Is he ARPA-net locatable?

As to Rand-AI - yes, the load is light (although exceeding 1 these days).
The I/O waits are becoming irritating -- I assume all the more so because

Mail me any comments you have, ASAP.

Apparently I'll swap my home terminal for the Nick-ed one earmarked
for a direct line (according to Ingeborg). I'm currently using MRG's,
which is less than optimal (ie while it doesn't hang me up, it does still
invert a host of letters are arbitrary times); until that terminal comes
back from the repair shop; any month now...

Well, as you may have guessed, I've not had a chance to finish writing up that
section. The stil-unfleshed carcus is EXPERT[1,rdg]. Shall I mail it to you
to complete (or to read thru before deciding to dump it and start over from
scratch...)?

A modified version is on rll.d2, on csd.lenat@score.
Please look it over if you have the fhance, and send me comments.
This is still not finalized, and the mods are mostly
Don Waterman's.

Let's get together some more re Eurisko/RLL betrothal.
I enjoyed the meeting with your friend, and hope he
decides to come here for a bit to learn more of RLLing.

Doug -
I looked quickly thru the paper, and am pretty happy with it.
I left a set of corrections (mostly at the typo level) in your mailbox.

Two asides:
1. I had to unprotect the file to read it.
2. I sent a copy of it to Avron, figuring it is now the latest piece of
	RLL propoganda.

is slowly coming into shape, I think. The current version, with many
holes and errors still remaining, is at WAITS, on IJCAI[1,RDG].
(The version on [RDG,DBL] is a backup copy, just in case.)
Please feel free to examine it coarsely -- ignoring minor typos,
non sequitars, and the like, and concentrating on the overall
flow and semantic content of the paper.

The goal is a paper of under 6000 words. I figure I'm about 3/4s the
way done (in terms of quantities of words, not quality of sentences),
and have used about 3000-3500 words.

Schedule:
I think I can "generate" all the words by tonight (or tomorrow
afternoon at the latest). If you could look at it by then, I'll be
set to begin making the drastic changes over the next few days.

I'm assuming you do not want co-authorship -- or at least the work associated
with that title. Also, how rigid is that 1 March deadline? Would it be
rejected outright if I mailed it say, Monday, 2-March?

See you tomorrow AM?
	Russ
